What is your WHY?

26/04/2017

In an organisation, a clearly defined and communicated purpose, why does the company exist above making money, engages employees to the company and its goals. It helps employees to understand, for what are they giving their effort for, and gives their work a clear meaning. Similarly, we as individuals need a clear purpose in our life to truly engage in our actions and fight through challenges.

Purpose is the very reason why you exist. It's the highest mission in your life and the values supporting it. Purpose is a filter through which you can make decisions to bring your cause to life. It provides a direction to your life and support in front of difficult times.

He who has a why can endure any how - Nietzsche

For some purpose is simply to survive, have comfort and pleasure. Others find it from the values of a community (e.g. family, neighbourhood, religious or ethnic group).
As the complexity of life increases, you might decide to give up conforming to the commonly expected concepts and start deeper self-reflection and turn inward finding new values within yourself. Personal growth, improvement and actualization of potential become the main goal of life.
Or you might turn away from the self, back toward an integration with other people and with universal values. At this point the extremely individualized person willingly merges his interests with those of a larger whole.

What the purpose is doesn't really matter. As long as it provides clear objectives, clear rules for action, and a way to concentrate and become involved, any goal can serve to give meaning to your life.

Your purpose is where your passion meets the needs of the world

To find your higher individual purpose you need to become a seeker of self. Start by asking following questions:

  • What is so important in life that I am ready to push through any challenge?
  • What is attracting my energy like a magnetic field and makes me truly happy?
  • What are the values that I can proudly follow and base my decisions on?
  • What do I really enjoy and how can I connect this to making something purposeful for me and others?
  • What is the thing that goes over success and money?
  • What is my role in this world?
  • How am I being of service to the world?
  • How do I want to be remembered?

For your health and wellbeing it's important to go through the journey of defining your deeper why. When jumping into change projects like starting to exercise, weight loss or other life style changes, its highly helpful to have a bigger goal (purpose) behind guiding and motivating you. It gives a clear meaning for your effort.

Lack of deeper reason make your efforts to improve wellbeing, or making other changes in life, rely on limited resources of willpower and resilience. When you have a deeper understanding why you are trying to improve or change something, and why it's necessary, you are more engaged to the project and significantly increase the chances of achieving sustainable results.

Good luck on your journey!
